There are 2 kinds of non-sparking, non-magnetic materials available:

    1.   Be-Cu: Beryllium Copper (Best material for Non Sparking Non-Magnetic Tools, the very highest quality)

    2.   Al-Cu: Aluminium Bronze (Economic material for Non Sparking Tools, still excellent)

    --

Non-sparking, non-magnetic hand tools are made of Aluminum-Bronze (Al-Br) or Copper-Beryllium (CuBe2). These alloys are specifically designed to eliminate the risk of sparks at sites where explosive atmospheres may be present. Explosive atmospheres are classified by Ex Zones where hazardous, flammable or combustible vapors, liquids, dusts or residues may be present.

Non-sparking hand tools, also known as spark resistant tools, comply with ATEX directives for Ex Zones 0, 1 and 2 (Flammable Gas, Mists or Vapors); Zones 20, 21 and 22 (Combustible Dusts); and M1 and M2 for mining. Our non-sparking hand tools are etched with the Ex Zone classification into them, thereby indicating in which zones the tool can be used. See chart below for Ex Zone definitions.

How to Choose the Correct Alloy for Your Application

    Aluminum-Bronze (Al-Br) Alloy

    Copper-Beryllium (CuBe2) Alloy

    Zone Compatibility

Help fulfill the demand in the ATEX Directive 94/9/EC for work in Zones 1 and 2 (Gas, Mists or Vapors), plus Zones 21 and 22 (Dusts).

    Hardness

    23-35 HRC

    33-45 HRC

    Durability

    Not as durable as Cu-Be.

Very durable due to high hardness and tensile strength.

    Magnetic Properties

Low magnetism due to minimal ferrous components. Appropriate for non-critical non-magnetic applications.

Non-ferrous components; safer for applications demanding non-magnetic properties,

Such as Military mine clearance, nuclear ,aircraft industries etc.

    Ex Zone Definitions

    Gas, Mists or Vapors

    Dusts

    • Zone 0 – An atmosphere where a mixture of air and flammable substances in the form of gas, vapor or mist is present frequently, continuously or for long periods.

    • Zone 20 – An atmosphere where a cloud of combustible dust in the air is present frequently, continuously or for long periods.

Zone 1 – An atmosphere where a mixture of air and flammable substances in the form of gas, vapor or mist is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.

Zone 21 – An atmosphere where a cloud of combustible dust in the air is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.

Zone 2 – An atmosphere where a mixture of air and flammable substances in the form of gas, vapor or mist is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for only a short period.

Zone 22 – An atmosphere where a cloud of combustible dust in the air is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for only a short period.
